Chiropractic Adjustment
The Spinal Adjustment is the term used to refer to the procedure that is employed to correct vertebral subluxations. The intensity and location of the adjustments may vary from treatment to treatment, depending on the outcome of the evaluation on that particular visit. The scientific terminology used to describe an adjustment is "closed reduction vertebral repositioning". Spinal adjustments will change the internal structure and function of the spine, therefore restoring normal vertebral function.
Videofluoroscopy
Videofluoroscopy (VF) is a fascinating diagnostic tool which allows the spine to be radiographically examined while in motion. The patient is placed standing under a fluoroscope, and is then asked to perform specified ranges of motion while these motions are being recorded on a videotape. These motions are observed on a monitor at the time the patient is performing them, recorded, and are kept as a part of the patient's permanent record.
Modern technology has made it possible for this machine to work at a very low radiation dosage, thus making the exposure to the patient very minimal in comparison with conventional radiographs.
Thermographic Temperature Readings
Thermographic temperature readings are obtained on each visit to our office. A highly sensitive infrared light is used to compute the external body temperature, which is normally 93.5 degrees. This temperature should not be confused with the normal internal body temperature, which is 98.6 degrees for most people.
The infrared light is a handheld instrument which is slowly glided from the lower spine to the top of the spine while the temperature is computed throughout. A graph printout is then produced by the computer console, and these graph printouts are kept as part of the patient's permanent file.
Throughout our Chiropractic research, we have determined that the external body temperature is controlled by spinal nerves. The body is normally composed of dermatomes, which are areas of the skins that are controlled by the spinal nerve roots. This instrument is glided over each dermatome in the spine. These temperature readings are very valuable in monitoring the changes that take place in the spine and with the spinal nerves. While they are not specific in diagnosing spinal problems, they are helpful in identifying areas of nerve interference in the spine.
Computerized Force Analysis and Recording Instrument
The Computerized Force Analysis Instrument is the most recent technological development from our research center. Developed by an engineer, this instrument is used to assist in detecting, correcting and monitoring vertebral subluxations. It measures the biomechanical activity of each spinal segment, which indirectly measures neurological function by comparing the pneumatic force of the instrument, which is connected to the computer brain through a calibrated sensor, against the resistance of the paraspinal tissue.
Information is displayed on the computer screen indicating the areas of abnormal spinal function and its suspected subluxations. A correlation is then made with the videofluoroscopic, radiographic, and thermographic findings, accurately and precisely identifying the spinal subluxations.
Treatment is then administered by programming the appropriate information into the computer. Mechanical, low velocity repetitious thrusts controlled by the computer are then applied to the corresponding spinal segments to begin the correction of the subluxations. This procedure is called a "Chiropractic adjustment".
Post treatment analysis with the computer and thermographic temperature readings determine the necessity for subsequent spinal adjustments and future fluoroscopic studies.
Once complete correction of the spinal subluxations is obtained, the computerized instrument is a very valuable tool in early detection and prevention of future subluxations.
